The word for ‘hearth’ in Spanish —hogar— has gradually come to mean the same as the entire ‘home’, the totality of inhabited space. From the times of the simple woodfire (hoguera) to the sophisticated heating systems developed in modern times, the position and the importance of the source of heat has developed along with the very culture of domestic habits. In the following article, Luis Fernández-Galiano briefly outlines the history of the culture of fire from its primitive myths to its present-day isothermal spaces.
