The firm that now styles itself as Ennead Architects lost its visible head, James Stewart Polshek, on 9 September, shortly before its sixtieth anniversary. After starting out working for I. M. Pei and others, this Ohioan set up his own practice, which despite its unrecognizable new name – it was rebaptized in 2010 to detach it from Polshek after his retirement a few years before – is behind emblematic projects like the Carnegie Hall restoration and the American Museum of Natural History’s Rose Center for Earth and Space, both in New York, and the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas. From 1973 to 1987 he was dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), which he brought new life to and turned into a reference worldwide.[+]
