Ummah in Arabic language refers to the community of Islam believers regardless of their nationality or doctrinal interpretation of the Koran.Through the photographs included in the book Ummah, imágenes de un islam plural (or ‘Ummah, images of a plural Islam’), Luis Monreal shows us the great diversity that exists behind this concept of unity. As founding director of the Geneva-based Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Monreal travels around Muslim countries coordinating the reconstruction of monuments, neighborhoods and public spaces, improving the socioeconomic conditions of the population. Equipped with a Contax camera, he participated in the early 1960s in the UNESCO campaign to save the Nubian monuments in Egypt and Sudan. Though he began his activity with the purpose of documenting his work as archaeologist and art historian, over the years he focussed his interest on capturing fleeting moments, immortalizing ways of life that unfortunately may no longer exist in the future...[+]
