The scheme drawn up by the Catalan architect Javier de las Heras Solé that placed first in the 2015 ideas competition for a school of music in Amorebieta-Etxano, a municipality in the Basque comarca of Duranguesado, presents a compact box cutting a singular figure and functioning independently of, but as a complement to, the Zelaieta cultural center, separated from it by a courtyard at ground level and a free void above that, and with the party wall becoming a facade in itself, showing layers of time in a superposition of walls.
The upper stories organize the program in a regular prism set parallel to the party wall and forming a cantilever. The structure along the perimeter turns the facade into a loadbearing element, making a diaphanous floor plan possible, with the resulting maximization of usable area. The stairs rise outside the prism, encased in glass.
