World Car Center WCC, Vaillo+Irigaray Architects

The Navarre practice of Antonio Vaíllo and Juan Luis Irigaray has won the competition organized by Vigo's Duty-Free Zone Consortium for the construction of the World Car Center. The project comprises two new buildings and an intervention on an existing residential block, located beside Balaídos Stadium.

The entries came anonymously, with a motto. The other fourteen finalists were: Dominique Perrault; Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra; Irisarri + Piñera; Mangado y Asociados; Nieto Sobejano; Eduardo Arroyo; Paredes Pedrosa; Sancho-Madridejos; Tuñón Arquitectos; César Portela, Antonio Reboreda Martínez, Jorge Salgado Cortizas and Celso López Martín; Victoria Acebo and Ángel Alonso; Esteban Bonell, José Manuel Casabella, José María Gil, and José Luis Martínez; Vier Arquitectos and Temha; and MTM Arquitectos + Nodo 17 Group.

On the jury were David Regardes Fernández (chairperson), Santiago López-Guerra Román (secretary), Andrés Fernández-Albalat, Luis Fernández-Galiano, Fernando Márquez, José Ramón Torres, María del Carmen Gómez Manzano, Antonio Dávila Alonso, Alberto de Paula Prieto, and María Luisa Sobrino del Río.

The center, containing 14,000 square meters and to go up on a budget of 14 million euros, will harbor various initiatives of Galicia's transport sector, including headquarters for Business Factory Auto (BFA) and High Tech Auto – business accelerator and incubator for the sector, respectively...
